Understanding Our Name
AFRICAN:
- Acknowledges that people of African decent and heritage organized the AME Church.
- The church was founded in Philadelphia, NOT IN Africa.
- The church is NOT ONLY for people of African decent.
METHODIST:
- Acknowledges that the AME Church belongs to the family of Methodist Churches.
- In the Methodist tradition we encourage the preaching and teaching of the gospel in such away that anyone can understand.
- In the Methodist tradition, we endeavor to create an environment where free, spirit-filled and transformative worship can take place.
EPISCOPAL:
- Episcopal refers to our form of Church Government
- In the Episcopal form of Church government Bishops are the Chief executive and Administrative officers. They have the responsibility of…

- Appointing pastors to churches within their district/jurisdiction
- Overseeing the spiritual and temporal affairs of the Church at all levels
CHURCH:
- Acknowledges that we are a community of faithful men and women who are active members of the body of Christ called the church. We believe that God is the creator of heaven and earth; Jesus Christ is God’s only begotten son and our savior and in the Holy Spirit who empowers believers to be God's witness in world.
